Vietnam by motorbike: pick the mountains, the pass or the city.
In Vietnam the motorbike is how everybody travels, so a motorbike tour is the local way in rather than a novelty. The rides split into a handful of very different trips. Here is what each costs to book.

Where motorbike tours are worth the flight.
Northern Vietnam for the mountain loops, the central coast for the pass, Saigon for the food. Then Spain, France and the Himalaya when you want sidecars, Andalusian bends or altitude.
Do you need a motorcycle licence for a motorbike tour?
Not if somebody else is riding. On an easy rider tour, a sidecar outing or a street-food run you sit behind or beside a local driver, and no licence comes into it. Riding yourself is different. Vietnam expects a licence that covers motorcycles, which for most visitors means an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, and most travel insurance stops paying out for anyone riding without one. Rentals, dirt-bike days and self-ride loops are where the question matters.
The motorbike tours more riders book than any other.

Saigon street food by motorbike, once the heat breaks.
Ho Chi Minh City eats on the pavement and moves on two wheels, so the food tour comes with a scooter seat. A rider collects you from the hotel, threads the evening traffic and stops wherever the plastic stools are full.
Three motorbike rides nothing else can copy.
A minibus can drive the Ha Giang Loop and a taxi can cross the Hai Van Pass. Neither is the point.

The Ha Giang Loop
A circuit of roughly 350 kilometres through the far north, up on the Dong Van karst plateau against the Chinese border. The road climbs the Ma Pi Leng Pass above the Nho Que gorge and drops through Hmong market towns. Most people ride it over three or four days behind a local easy rider, sleeping in homestays where dinner ends with rice wine.

The Hai Van Pass
The old road climbs about 500 metres over a spur of the Truong Son range between Da Nang and Hue, with the sea on one side and cloud on the summit most mornings. Trucks take the tunnel underneath, which leaves the bends to motorbikes. Easy riders run it one way between Hue and Hoi An, stopping at the fort on top and the lagoon at Lang Co.

The vintage sidecar
The Ural sidecar outfit, built on a 1930s BMW design, turned out to be the most charming way to see a European capital. You sit in the chair, the driver deals with the cobbles and the roundabouts, and the machine draws a crowd at every stop. Paris, Barcelona and Lisbon run the best of them.

Motorbike tours in Europe: sidecars in the cities, mountain roads beyond.
Europe does the motorbike tour differently: shorter, dearer and built around the machine, from a vintage sidecar to a rented BMW or Harley for the passes. Spain has the most choice, Paris the most charm.

Four motorbike tours to book before you land.
Most city rides can be arranged the night before. These four run on small groups, short seasons or a single rider whose diary fills up well ahead.

- 02Hai Van Pass Motorbike Private Tour with Mister T Easy RiderA private easy rider carries one passenger over the pass a day, so the best-reviewed riders book out weeks ahead.
- 03Himalayas: 11 Day Motorbike Expedition To Ladakh (North India)The Himalayan roads to Ladakh are open roughly June to September. Outside that window there is no ride.
- 04Paris Vintage Private City Tour on a Sidecar MotorcycleEach outfit carries one or two passengers and only a few run in Paris. Weekend slots go early.
